Centre and AAP Governments Creating Artificial Shortage of DAP Fertilizer to Save Subsidy: Pargat Singh

Jalandhar, October 28, 2025: All India Congress Committee Secretary and MLA Padma Shri Pargat Singh has condemned the Centre and Punjab governments for forcing Punjab farmers to purchase useless “nano” products along with subsidized DAP fertilizers. He alleged that this scam is taking place under the watch of both governments. The former Cabinet Minister said that farmers in Punjab have already suffered severe losses in their paddy crops due to floods. Now, with the shortage of DAP fertilizer during the wheat sowing season, they are facing yet another challenge. Farmers are being forced to run from one place to another to procure DAP at inflated rates—an evident failure of the Punjab government.

According to Pargat Singh, dealers have confirmed that fertilizer stocks are pre-tagged by central agencies, yet the Bhagwant Mann government remains silent. He questioned why farmers are being exploited during the peak sowing season, adding that both the BJP government at the Centre and the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab appear determined to destroy Punjab’s agriculture sector.

He further said that wheat sowing across Punjab has already begun, and the shortage of DAP has placed farmers in deep distress. Farmers are being compelled to buy pesticides and inputs at exorbitant prices, making cultivation financially unsustainable. He pointed out that lakhs of hectares of paddy have already been destroyed due to floods, and if DAP is not made available immediately, wheat sowing will also be severely affected, causing huge losses to the farming community.

Highlighting the situation, Pargat Singh stated that Punjab requires 5.50 lakh tonnes of DAP fertilizer for the current Rabi season, but only 3.50 lakh tonnes have arrived so far, leaving a shortfall of nearly 2 lakh tonnes. Official figures show that last year, only 4 lakh tonnes of DAP were received during the wheat season.

Pargat Singh added that even the Samyukt Kisan Morcha has accused the Centre of deliberately curbing DAP procurement to save on subsidies, thereby creating hardships for farmers. He demanded that the governments immediately ensure the supply of adequate DAP fertilizer for Punjab farmers.
