Central University of Punjab secures prestigious PURSE and i-TBI Grants worth Rs 12.57 Crore

Bathinda, September 5, 2023: In a dedicated effort to foster a culture of high-quality research, innovation, and entrepreneurship among India's youth, the Central University of Punjab, Bathinda (CUPB) has obtained a significant milestone by securing two highly prestigious grants, PURSE (Promotion of University Research and Science Excellence) and i-TBI (Inclusive Technology Business Incubator) from the Department of Science and Technology, with a combined value of Rs 12.57 Crore.

The university recently received official correspondence from the Department of Science and Technology, regarding grant approvals of Rs 8.82 Crore under the PURSE Programme and an additional Rs 3.75 Crore under the i-TBI Scheme.

PURSE Grant: Prof. Anjana Munshi, the Coordinator of the PURSE Project and Director of the R&D Cell, while elaborating on the utilization of DST-PURSE Grant mentioned that it will primarily support our research efforts aimed at understanding the development and progression of breast cancer, as well as the development of new treatment methods. This grant will facilitate the acquisition of sophisticated equipment such as LC-MS/MS, Flow Cytometry Cell Sorter, and Flash Chromatography Systems. Prof. Munshi further emphasized that in the forthcoming years, the PURSE Facility will play a pivotal role in identifying key molecular signatures (genomic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic markers) of breast cancer prevalent in the Malwa region of Punjab. Furthermore, it will also aid in raising awareness among the local population for early intervention, ultimately reducing morbidity and mortality related to breast cancer.

i-TBI Grant: Prof. Anjana Munshi also informed that the sanction of the i-TBI grant will help in the creation of an incubation model designed to nurture innovative ideas within the fields of Agriculture, Environment, and Health sectors. Prof. Munshi highlighted that a portion of this grant will be dedicated to acquiring a 3D Printer, establishing a Food Processing facility, and procuring other sophisticated equipment. The i-TBI grant aims to empower young innovators to turn their ideas into meaningful solutions, thereby making a significant contribution to the nation's scientific and technological advancement.

On this momentous occasion, Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Punjab, expressed profound gratitude to the Department of Science and Technology and the Government of India. Prof. Tiwari underscored the significance of the DST-PURSE and DST i-TBI Grants, totalling Rs 12.57 Crore, in creating state-of-the-art research facilities for developing innovative solutions to the challenges faced by the Malwa region and in supporting aspiring entrepreneurs in turning their innovative ideas into successful startup ventures.

Prof. Monisha Dhiman, Director, IQAC, asserted that both these grants will help to promote research, innovation and scientific temperament among youngsters. These grants will also provide our researchers an opportunity to find innovative solutions to problems of society.

Very shortly, the University will organize a special event aimed at providing a platform for young innovators to showcase their creative ideas. Shortlisted start-ups will receive seed funding to accelerate their entrepreneurial journey.
