The Department of Geology, Central University of Punjab, under the patronage of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra Prasad Tiwari, organized an expert lecture on “Geostatistics in the Digital Era – from Classical Linear Models to Machine Learning Approaches”.

Bathinda, September 17, 2025:  The Department of Geology, Central University of Punjab, under the patronage of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra Prasad Tiwari, organized an expert lecture on “Geostatistics in the Digital Era – from Classical Linear Models to Machine Learning Approaches”.

The invited speaker of this programme was Prof. Bhabesh Chandra Sarkar, Full-time Distinguished Visiting Professor, Department of Earth Sciences, IIT Bombay, who delivered the keynote address. Prof. Sarkar highlighted the evolution of geostatistics from classical linear models to the application of modern machine learning techniques. He explained how these approaches are revolutionizing geoscientific research, particularly in areas such as mineral exploration, environmental monitoring, and predictive modelling.

In his presidential address, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tiwari appreciated Prof. Sarkar’s insightful lecture and emphasized the growing significance of integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning with geosciences. He encouraged students and researchers to adopt advanced analytical tools to address the pressing challenges of earth science.

The programme commenced with the University Kulgeet and the watering of plants, symbolizing the university’s commitment to sustainability. Prof. Kshetrimayum Krishnakanta Singh, Head of the Department of Geology, delivered the welcome address, followed by an introduction of the expert by Dr. Rahul Mukherjee, Convener of the event. The event also featured the felicitation of the guest, followed by a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Jitendra Kumar Pattanaik. The programme concluded with the National Anthem.

Faculty members from School of Environment and Earth Sciences along with research scholars, and students from different departments participated enthusiastically, making the session highly interactive and impactful.
