Shyam Sunder Malhotra and Saravjit Kaur get elected as senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor
Ludhiana, March 26, 2018: Finally, this industrial city today got new mayor. Sixty-three-year-old four-time municipal councillor Balkar Singh is the new mayor. He was elected as the new mayor on Monday.
The election for the post of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor too was also held today. As such, Shyam Sunder Malhotra and Saravjit Kaur have been elected senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor, respectively.
Earlier to it, the newly elected municipal councillors were administered oath by Divisional Commissioner, Patiala.
Sixth House of Municipal Corporation Ludhiana (MCL) has come into existence with the today’s development.
Balkar Singh on being elected as the new mayor expressed his gratitude to all and said he is committed for overall development of Ludhiana.
The elections to MCL were held in the month of February this year and the poll results were announced on February 27. Congress had won 62 seats out of the 95 in these elections followed by SAD (11), BJP (10), Lok Insaaf Party (7) and AAP (1).
People of this industrial city have great expectations from Balkar Singh as they think that he is experienced municipal councillor, seasoned politician and very energetic.
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament (MP) Ravneet Singh Bittu on Monday said that seniority, experience, family background and personal life were the criteria behind the selection of Mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor of Ludhiana Municipal Corporation.
In a statement, MP said that Congress party has always given priority to merit in the selection of persons on the higher posts.
He revealed that Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu is a simple and hardworking worker of the party and Senior Deputy Mayor belongs to martyrs' family. He stated that deputy mayor Sarbjeet Kaur who belongs to SC community has been elected on the basis of seniority.
He claimed that new team would put Ludhiana back on development track and would meet the expectations of city residents.
