AIR POLLUTION DUST GENERATED FROM INDUCTION FURNACES TO BE RE-UTILIZED FOR METAL RECOVERY: PPCB

Ludhiana, December 18, 2017: Punjab Pollution Control Board has launched drive to guide the industries to adopt cleaner technologies as well as re-utilization of their waste material for useful purposes. In continuation of this drive, the Board in collaboration with M/s Madhav Alloys of Mandi Gobindgarh, got conducted trial runs for re-utilization of air pollution dust generated from induction furnace units and has been successful in establishing a technology in which this type of hazardous waste can be recycled to recover metals like Zinc, Iron, Silica, Lead etc.

Today Punjab Pollution Control Board Ludhiana conducted an interactive workshop with the induction furnace units operating in District Ludhiana, wherein the technical experts from the recycler gave a presentation describing the reuse of air pollution dust generated from these units. The workshop was attended by more than 50 industrialists including Sh. K.K. Garg, President all india Induction Furnace Association. Sh. Pardeep Gupta, Chief Engineer, PPCB, Ludhiana along with other senior officers was present on the occasion. Sh. Gupta while interacting with the industrialists present in the workshop highlighted the need of the hour to switch over to cleaner technologies.

He informed that till now the dust collected by induction furnace units through their control devices was being got disposed off through the hazardous waste facility at Nimbua at about Rs. 8000 per ton, but now the same dust will be got lifted by M/s Madhav Alloys at a cost of about Rs. 1000 per ton thus effecting a saving of about 80% in expenditure as well as major steps towards control of pollution in Ludhiana. This plant of Madhav Alloys has been approved by the Central Pollution Control Board as well as Punjab Pollution Control Board. The industrialists present in the workshop evinced a lot of interest in the proposal and assured to dispose off their air pollution dust through this recycler of hazardous waste.
