AAP Strongly Opposes the Decision to Release Additional 8,500 Cusecs of Water to Haryana, Says - 'Decision Unacceptable'

Chandigarh, May 1, 2025: The Aam Aadmi Party strongly opposed the decision to release an additional 8,500 cusecs of water to Haryana from the BBMB. Party leaders have stated that Haryana has already utilized its share of water, and the remaining water belongs to Punjab. Therefore, this decision is unacceptable at any cost.

Opposing the decision, AAP leader and Cabinet Minister Dr. Balbir said that the Centre is wrongfully giving Punjab's water to Haryana, which is a betrayal of the people of Punjab. Warning the BJP and the central government, Dr. Balbir Singh said that any attempt to snatch Punjab's water will be costly. He stated that the people of Punjab neither deceive others nor tolerate deception. This injustice will not be accepted by the people of Punjab.

Dr. Balbir questioned Punjab BJP leaders, asking where they stand on this issue. He urged them to openly oppose the decision and ask their party's central government to revoke it. He also demanded clarification from the Congress party, stating that Punjab Congress leaders should publicly take a stand on this matter and support the Punjab government.
BJP Government is Conspiring to Loot Punjab's Water, We Will Not Accept This at Any Cost, Will Fiercely Oppose It: Kataruchakk

Cabinet Minister Lalchand Kataruchakk accused the central BJP government of conspiring against Punjab's water. He stated that this decision is unacceptable under any circumstances. The Aam Aadmi Party will vehemently oppose it and demand the Centre to withdraw its decision.

Kataruchakk added that granting Haryana an additional 8,500 cusecs of water from Punjab's share is akin to rubbing salt into Punjabis' wounds. He warned the Centre not to weaken Punjab's rights or target its farmers. He emphasized that Punjabis will never forgive the BJP for this act, and the party will firmly resist the decision.

Centre Must Withdraw Its Decision; We Cannot Provide Additional Water to Other States at Any Cost: Meet Hayer
AAP MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer also opposed the decision, stating that the BJP and the central government are deliberately troubling the people and farmers of Punjab. He explained that of the total 31 MAF water, Punjab has historically received 12 MAF, with the rest allocated to Haryana and Rajasthan. This time, Haryana has exhausted its share and is now pressuring the Centre to take water from Punjab's share.

Raising questions about Yamuna water, Meet Hayer highlighted that during the partition, Haryana took its share of water from Punjab, but the allocation of Yamuna water, which was a shared resource, was not discussed. He argued that Punjab should also receive water from the Yamuna.

He pointed out that due to water scarcity, nearly 70–80% of paddy-growing areas in Punjab have fallen into the dark zone, compared to around 55–60% in Haryana. Therefore, the Centre must immediately withdraw its decision. If not, the Aam Aadmi Party will raise its voice against it from the streets to Parliament and will organize large-scale protests with the support of its leaders, workers, and the people of Punjab.
