Ludhiana, August 26, 2014: 14-day old male child weighing 1.3 kg was admitted in Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana with difficulty in breathing. Patient was admitted in Pediatric Nursery ward and resuscitated.

As patient was not able to breathe, so was kept on ventilator. Medical investigations revealed that baby had large cystic mass on the left upper part of lung which was compressing the heart and normal lung to opposite side. The histopathological examination of the affected lung revealed Congenital Cystic Adenomatoid malformation (CCAM).

Patient was planned for surgery but in view of low birth weight and low condition of baby, it was a high risk surgery. Patient was operated by team of Pediatric surgeons comprising Dr Sushil Budhiraja and Dr Vijay Kundal.

During the surgery, chest of the baby was opened and large diseased part of lung was removed.  After surgery, patient was managed by pediatric team headed by Dr Harmesh Singh Bains. After successful surgery, patient was discharged in healthy condition after hospitalisation of 8-10 days.

Though many small babies are being regularly operated in the department of Pediatric Surgery, but this case was challenging in view of extremely low birth weight and low general condition of the baby.
