World Thalassemia Day Celebrated at DMC&H
On the occasion of World Thalassemia Day, the Department of Pediatrics DMC&H, Ludhiana, organized a heartwarming and awareness-driven celebration aimed at supporting children suffering from thalassemia. With the global theme for 2025 being “Together for Thalassaemia: Uniting Communities, Prioritizing Patients,” the event focused on spreading awareness, encouraging preventive care, and celebrating the resilience of young thalassemia warriors.

Ludhiana, May 8, 2025: On the occasion of World Thalassemia Day, the Department of Pediatrics DMC&H, Ludhiana, organized a heartwarming and awareness-driven celebration aimed at supporting children suffering from thalassemia. With the global theme for 2025 being “Together for Thalassaemia: Uniting Communities, Prioritizing Patients,” the event focused on spreading awareness, encouraging preventive care, and celebrating the resilience of young thalassemia warriors.
The event was led by Dr. Gurpreet Singh, Pediatric Hemato-Oncologist at DMCH, who organized a painting competition for children with thalassemia. The children took part with great excitement, expressing themselves through colors and art. Gifts were given to all participants, and the top three paintings received special prizes, making the day even more special for the young artists.
Bipin Gupta, Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society, Mukesh Verma, Treasurer, DMC&H Managing Society along with Dr. Sandeep Kaushal, Dean Academics, and Dr. Sandeep Sharma, Medical Superintendent visited the thalassemia ward. They spent time with the children and their families, listened to their experiences, and shared warm wishes.
The event also saw participation from other senior faculty members from Pediatric department including Dr Puneet Pooni, Professor & Head, Dr. Kamal Arora, Professor, Dr. G.S. Dhooria, Professor, Dr. Sumati Verma, Assistant Professor and Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Head of the Department of Transfusion Medicine.
Bipin Gupta personally distributed the prizes to the winners and appreciated the initiative, saying, It’s heartwarming to see the joy on these children’s faces. Events like this not only raise awareness but also give emotional support to families. I truly appreciate Dr. Gurpreet and his team for organizing this.
Dr. G.S. Wander, Principal, DMC&H, emphasized the significance of inclusivity and emotional support for thalassemia patients. He stated, “These children have immense potential and dreams like any other child. We must ensure they feel included, valued, and encouraged. Today’s event is not just about celebration—it’s a powerful reminder that children with thalassemia can lead normal, fulfilling lives when society supports them without bias.”
Dr. Puneet Pooni, Professor & Head, Department of Pediatrics, also highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and prevention. She said, “With proper care and regular treatment, thalassemia can be managed well. But the most powerful step is prevention. We want people to know that a simple blood test before marriage or during pregnancy can help prevent thalassemia in children.”
Dr. Gurpreet Singh, shared his views and said that “On this World Thalassemia Day, let us remember that prevention is the most powerful form of treatment. A simple blood test can save generations. Together, we can build a future free from thalassemia.”
In continuation of awareness efforts, Dr. Gurpreet Singh also delivered a special lecture at the DMCH Nursing College, Malakpur, focusing on prevention strategies for thalassemia, including carrier screening and antenatal diagnosis. His session was appreciated for its clarity and relevance in promoting community-level action.
