With this character, I get to portray my true opinions and I can be myself: Urvashi Dholakia aka Devi Singh Shekhawat

Sony SAB’s Pushpa Impossible is a portrayal of a woman’s unconventional journey to earn the utmost respect and dignity for herself in her life. The show depicts the story of Pushpa Patel (played by Karuna Pandey), a single mother who is determined to provide the best life possible for her children. The cast was recently joined by Urvashi Dholakia as Devi Singh Shekhawat, a criminal lawyer who helps Pushpa safeguard her family from Dilip Patel (played by Jayesh More), Pushpa’s ex-husband.

1)    So, you're playing a positive character after long hiatus is what made you take this role up?

Playing a positive character after a long hiatus is because all these years, I never got offered one. When the producer approached me with this character, for a moment, I got confused beyond imagination. It’s every actor’s dream to not get stagnated and typecasted which has happened over the years. Though it is not a very rare phenomenon but an absolute common one. Unfortunately, it has happened to me in many ways, but as far as positive role goes, this is like by far the first in 20 years. Anyone in my place would have grabbed it with open arms, and so did I.

2)    What plot changes do you think your character will bring to the story?

With Devi’s entry into Pushpa’s life, there will be a lot of twists and turns that will keep the audience on the edge of their seats. It will be a portrayal of emotions when two strong independent women who are also mothers will come together in order to protect their children as well as provide justice and fight for what is right.

3)    What was that one thought that made you believe in this role?

The fact that the makers had belief in me, meant everything to me. I had worked seven years ago too with the channel and the makers of this show and it was simply an amazing experience. So, the belief system is both ways. The kind of faith and trust put in is a big ordeal and I completely respect it.

4)    What are your thoughts on women leading such hard-hitting narratives and taking charge of their lives?

Over the years, I've always been asked this question, how do you think that the industry has changed? To be honest, I personally feel that women ruled TV right from the beginning. But over time the portrayal of women has certainly evolved, with different characters, and narratives of strong women. Television has always been a platform that has broken all perceptions about women, and I feel they are shattering the glass ceiling this time as well.

5)    What message you'd like to give through your character in Pushpa?

I believe a woman must always be confident and independent. There are fears of course, but overcoming them and taking the challenges head on makes you bold. I think its important for women to have a voice and be fearless and I have always had these virtues instilled in me. So, for me to portray this character is brilliant because I get to be myself.

6)    What kind of roles do you plan on taking and which genre intrigues you the most?

As an actor, I am always on the lookout for roles that challenge me and allow me to explore different aspects of the human experience. While I am open to a wide range of genres, I am particularly intrigued by character-driven dramas that delve into complex emotions and relationships. What really draws me to a role is the opportunity to bring a unique perspective and authenticity to the character. I love diving into the script, researching the time period and the psychology of the character, and finding ways to make them come to life on screen.

Ultimately, my goal is to continue to grow as an actor and to take on roles that push me to my limits and inspire me to bring my best work to the table. Whether it's a challenging lead role or a supporting part that adds depth and complexity to the story, I am always excited to explore new possibilities and to bring my skills and experience to the project and Pushpa Impossible checks all these boxes for me.
