Wetland Mitra Outreach Programme Held at Panjab University
Wetland Mitra outreach programme was organised today by Department of Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with the Department of Forests & Wildlife, Chandigarh under the DST sponsored project on Fish diversity by Dr. Ravneet Kaur.
Chandigarh, February 27, 2026: Wetland Mitra outreach programme was organised today by Department of Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with the Department of Forests & Wildlife, Chandigarh under the DST sponsored project on Fish diversity by Dr. Ravneet Kaur.
The programme aimed at creating awareness about wetland conservation, ecosystem services, and sustainable management of wetlands, with special reference to Sukhna Wetland.
Anup Kumar Soni, Conservator of Forest, UT Chandigarh, graced the occasion as the Keynote Speaker. In his address, he emphasised the ecological significance of wetlands and highlighted the ongoing conservation initiatives undertaken by the Forest Department for the protection of Sukhna Wetland and other urban wetlands. He encouraged students and researchers to actively participate in conservation efforts as responsible “Wetland Mitras”.
Dr. Gitanjali Kanwar, Senior Coordinator, WWF-India, delivered an expert lecture titled “Sukhna Wetland: Ecosystem Services and Conservation Potential.” She elaborated on the ecosystem services provided by wetlands including biodiversity support, flood regulation, carbon sequestration, and livelihood support. She also discussed community participation and policy-level interventions required for long-term conservation.
The interactive session that followed witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, research scholars, and faculty members. The speakers addressed queries related to wetland biodiversity, anthropogenic pressures, and strategies for sustainable management. Dr. Ravinder Kumar presided over the programme as Chairperson. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Ravneet Kaur acknowledging the valuable contributions of the speakers and participants.75 participants became WETLAND MITRAS and were given certificates.
