Nilokheri, March 30, 2026: Water is not merely a resource; it is the very foundation of life. In the present times, water pollution and water wastage have become matters of grave concern - issues that can only be resolved through collective efforts. These views were expressed by Dr. Virender Singh Chauhan, Director of the Haryana Institute of Rural Development (HIRD). He was addressing participants during the 'Ram Ram Haryana' program, specifically on the occasion of 'Zero Waste Day' and regarding the critical issue of drinking water conservation.
He emphasized that not a single drop of water should be allowed to go to waste. Furthermore, he issued a call to action to minimize waste generation. Dr. Chauhan explained that the primary objective of this program is to provide a platform for the voices of rural areas - to share the problems, suggestions, and positive developments associated with villages.
During the event, Gul Dhillon, the Sarpanch of Village Shamgarh, shared the details of the efforts undertaken by both the government and the local Panchayat to improve the drinking water situation in her village. Sarpanch Jasmer Chauhan of Sultanpur, along with Sarpanches from other villages, also participated in the program; and shared information regarding the developmental works, achievements, and challenges faced in their respective villages. The program also witnessed active participation from the audience.
Dr. Virender Singh Chauhan said that the water crisis today has evolved into a serious challenge—one that is not merely environmental, but also deeply social and health-related in nature. He pointed out that the alarming decline in groundwater levels, the pollution of water sources, and the unsustainable utilization of water serve as ominous signs for the future. He strongly emphasized that rainwater harvesting, the adoption of water-conserving habits, and a focused approach toward sanitation are absolutely essential.
He warned that if we do not become conscious of this issue in time, future generations may have to face severe water scarcity; therefore, it is the collective responsibility of us all to take concrete steps toward saving water, starting today. He urged the public to respect water, conserve it, and fulfill their duty to safeguard clean water for the generations to come.
Senior Advisor Gurbinder Singh from the National Institute of Rural Development, Pritam Yadav from Apna Radio 91.2 FM, and Bharat Sopori from Radio Vitasta 90 FM Ambala, among others attended the program.
