Wasteful expenditure on war and violence affects workers the most

On the international peace day AITUC pledges to work for a world free of nuclear weapons and violence of all kinds

Wasteful expenditure on war and violence affects workers the most

Ludhiana, September 1, 2022: Ludhiana unit of All  India Trade  Union Congress (AITUC) today on 1st September held a meeting to pay homage to the victims of fascism during the second World War. 1st September is being observed as the International Peace Day on the call of World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU). It is on this day that Hitler invaded Poland and that triggered the Second World War. It is pertinent to know that 5.5 crore people were killed during the Second World War out of which 1.5 crore belonged to Soviet Union alone. Acting on the behest of arms industry and corporate sector in Germany Hitler gave the slogan of superiority of German race over others. Based on this slogan he spread venom against the Jews, the Communist, the Socialist and all those who differ with him. He eliminated over 80 lakh people after putting them in the concentration camps hitherto unknown in the history of the world. The events in the Second World War ultimately lead to the use of nuclear weapons which killed over 2lak people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. The present day nuclear weapons are much more powerful and studies have shown that in the event of a nuclear exchange between Russia and USA the modern civilization will become extinct. Even a regional nuclear war like an exchange of nuclear weapons between India and Pakistan will lead to total crops failure for several years to come and kill over 2 billion people in the next 2 years. Therefore, it is the utmost duty of the workers to unite and oppose the arms race as in the event of war and violence it is the toiling people who suffer the most.

The speakers warned that the events going on in India are reminiscent of the events of 1930 in Germany. We have to unite to defeat such tendencies in our country through building social harmony.

The meeting was addressed by Dr Rajinder Pal, Gulzar Pandher, Charan Sarabha, Ramesh Rattan, Jasbir Jhajj, Dr Arun Mitra, Gurmail Singh Medley, D P Maur, Naresh Gaur, Kewal Singh Banwait, Ajit Jawadi.
