Dharamsala, May 31, 2026: Following the conclusion of vote counting for the Municipal Corporation elections in Himachal Pradesh, BJP leader and Dharamsala MLA Sudhir Sharma hailed his party's strong performance in the Dharamsala Municipal Corporation, describing the results as a reflection of public dissatisfaction with the state government.
Addressing the media on Sunday, Sharma said the BJP won 11 of the 17 seats in the Dharamsala Municipal Corporation, while the Congress secured five seats and one seat went to an independent candidate. He claimed the verdict indicated a clear mandate in favour of the BJP and against the ruling Congress.
The BJP MLA alleged that the government led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had failed to address the concerns of employees, youth, women, traders, and the general public, resulting in growing public discontent. He added that the electorate had once again expressed confidence in development-oriented governance and welfare-focused policies.
However, in Palampur Municipal Corporation, the Congress registered a decisive victory. Congress candidates won 11 of the 15 wards, while the BJP secured four seats. The party also succeeded in securing both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts in the corporation.
Municipal Corporation elections were held this year in Solan, Mandi, Palampur and Dharamsala, while Shimla did not go to polls. Barring Palampur, the ruling Congress faced setbacks in the other municipal corporations, making the results a significant political challenge for the state government.
