Two-day event celebrating Srimant Sankardev begins at PU

Chandigarh, March 13, 2023: Panjab University's Srimant Sankardev Chair has organised a two-day event celebrating the life and contribution of Assam's 16th century Saint poet Srimant Sankadev, which began today. This event is being held with the support of Government of Assam. On the first day, a declamation contest was held at PU's Sanskrit department, for which the chief guests were renowned scholars from Assam, Dr. Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti, Dr. Suryakant Tripathi, and Dr. Karabi Devi. In this event students of Sanskrit, Hindi and Police administration departments participated. Among the topics for declamation were social transformation and the bhakti movement, religious teachings of Srimant Sankardev, social reformer Srimant Sankardev, etc.         

Prof. Yojna Rawat, coordinator of the Srimant Sankardev Chair said, "Srimant Sankardev chair has been recently established and now various events shall be organised by the chair to spread the message of bhakti given by Srimant Sankardev.” She told that on the second day of the event that is 14th of March, a national seminar will be held at PU’s golden jubilee hall, where the winners of the declamation contest will be awarded cash prizes. Dr. Suryakant Tripathi expressed happiness at the event and said that the participants showed a good level of understanding regarding Srimant Sankardev’s life and contribution. Prof. V. K. Alankar, Academic Incharge of PU’s Sanskrit department, sang Sanskrit verses composed by him on Srimant Sankardev. Prof. Ashok Kumar, Professor of Kalidasa Chair, faculty members of Sanskrit department Dr. Shivaji Pandey, Dr. Satyan Sharma and Mr. Vijay Bharadwaj were present at the event. Research scholars of Sanskrit and Hindi departments also participated in the event.
