Nawanshahr: The Congress national spokesperson and Sri Anandpur Sahib MP Manish Tewari today demanded convening of the winter session of the parliament when it is all the more important for the house to sit and debate various pressing issues being faced by the country.

In a statement issued here today, he said, never in the parliamentary history of the country had winter session been skipped. “This time it is all the more important to hold the winter session of the parliament in view of the farmers’ unrest, Chinese aggression, Covid crisis and the sliding economy”, he observed.

Tewari said, it was all the more important to convene the parliament for the winter session in view of the farmers’ uprising when tens of thousands of farmers from different parts of the country are protesting around Delhi to seek the repealing of three controversial agricultural laws. “And the parliament is the best forum to debate and deliberate on these while keeping in view the concerns and demands of the farmers”, he said.

The Congress spokesperson pointed out, various parliamentary committees, like Standing Committees and Joint Parliamentary Committees were already holding regular ‘physical’ meetings and there was no logic or reason to skip the winter session of the house. He said, various protocols can be observed while holding the session.

Tewari said, the parliamentarians are the public representatives who should lead by example. “We owe it to the country to lead by example by not avoiding our duties because of the COVID”, he said, adding, skipping an entire session of the parliament will not only set a bad precedent but will send a wrong signal across the country.

“The show must go on while observing all the necessary precautions and protocols”, he remarked.
