Tarun Chugh Welcomes Centre’s Decision on Panjab University
Slams AAP Government for Neglecting University’s Financial and Administrative Responsibilities
Chandigarh, November 08, 2025: BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India have taken a sensitive and thoughtful decision after understanding the sentiments and feedback of Panjab University’s students, teachers, and former vice-chancellors. Chugh said this is a welcome step that reflects the Modi Government’s deep respect for academic autonomy and dialogue.
He added that the BJP has always been committed to protecting the rights of students and institutions because, for the party, education is not merely learning—it is nation-building.
Chugh said that the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress must stop politicising educational institutions. “Education needs sensitivity and dialogue, not opportunistic politics,” he remarked.
He questioned why the Punjab Government still owes Rs. 2,152 crore to Panjab University and asked why not even a single minister or MLA from the Punjab Government participates in the University’s Senate meetings.
Chugh further stated that since 2014, the Modi Government has granted Rs. 3,229 crore to Panjab University (60 percent of total grants), while the Punjab Government has contributed only Rs. 538 crore. He added that the Punjab Government has pending liabilities—Rs. 32 crore under Post-Matric Scholarships, Rs. 128 crore arrears in pensions, and funds for three hostels in the Muktsar Sahib Regional Centre.
Chugh said the Aam Aadmi Party must stop its petty politics against the people of Punjab and start fulfilling its responsibilities. “Punjab’s universities are temples of knowledge, not platforms for political drama,” Chugh said, adding that this is the time to strengthen education, not to engage in low level politics of AAP-Congress.
