SUPVA faculty Prof. Vibhanshu's Play 'Maharathi' to be staged in National Theatre Festival

The play 'Maharathi,' written by Prof. Vibhanshu Vaibhav of the Acting Department at Dada Lakhmi Chand State University of Performing and Visual Arts (DLCSUPVA), Rohtak has been selected for the National Theatre Festival to be held in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh.

Rohtak, February 19, 2026: The play 'Maharathi,' written by Prof. Vibhanshu Vaibhav of the Acting Department at Dada Lakhmi Chand State University of Performing and Visual Arts (DLCSUPVA), Rohtak has been selected for the National Theatre Festival to be held in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh.

Based on the life and struggle of Karna from the Mahabharata, the approximately 80-minute play will be performed by artists from the Abhiyan Social, Cultural and Theatre Institute, Gorakhpur. The National Theatre Festival, to be held at Dr. Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar (Madhya Pradesh) from February 20th to 24th, is being organized by the North Zone Cultural Centre, Prayagraj, and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. ‘Maharathi’ will be staged on the evening of February 23rd.

Vice Chancellor Dr. Amit Arya congratulated Prof. Vibhanshu Vaibhav, noting that he has also received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his playwriting. Registrar Dr. Gunjan Malik Manocha also congratulated Prof. Vibhanshu Vaibhav.

Prof. Vibhanshu Vaibhav said that that over 2,000 performances of this play have been carried out across the country by various institutions. Renowned actors such as Manoj Bajpayee, Ashish Vidyarthi, Saurabh Shukla, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Vijay Raaz, among others, have also performed in this play.

He said that 'Maharathi' is based on the backdrop of the Mahabharata and centres on the life of Karna. It portrays Karna's struggles, his pain, and his glorious personality. Caste discrimination, social contempt and his unwavering generosity are prominently shown in the play. The play strikes at the evils of social hierarchy and discrimination prevalent in society. Besides Hindi, this play has also been staged in English, Maithili, Punjabi, Bengali, and Marathi.
