Special Lecture on Mahatma Gandhi’s Contemporary Relevance Held at Panjab University

To mark Martyrdom Day, the Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, organized a special lecture on “Mahatma Gandhi: Indian Nationalism and its Contemporary Relevance.” The lecture was delivered by Prof. Amarjit Singh, a distinguished scholar and academician. Around 90+ students and faculty members from allied departments attended the programme.

Chandigarh, January 30, 2026: To mark Martyrdom Day, the Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, organized a special lecture on “Mahatma Gandhi: Indian Nationalism and its Contemporary Relevance.” The lecture was delivered by Prof. Amarjit Singh, a distinguished scholar and academician. Around 90+ students and faculty members from allied departments attended the programme.

Prof. Yojna Rawat, Dean University Instruction, Panjab University, delivered the inaugural address as the chief guest. She emphasized that Martyrdom Day is a solemn occasion to remember Mahatma Gandhi’s supreme sacrifice and to renew collective commitment to his ideals of truth, non-violence, unity, and ethical living. She highlighted that Gandhi’s moral courage and peaceful approach continue to remain relevant in strengthening democratic and social values.

In his lecture, Prof. Amarjit Singh paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and reflected on his vision of Indian nationalism rooted in inclusivity, non-violence, and moral responsibility. He discussed the relevance of Gandhian principles such as Ahimsa, Satyagraha, social harmony, and self-reliance in addressing present-day social, political, and ethical challenges, urging the younger generation to view Gandhian philosophy as a living guide for responsible citizenship and nation-building.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Manish Sharma, Chairperson, Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, who expressed gratitude to the speakers and participants. The event also featured prize distribution for on-the-spot essay and slogan writing competitions organized as part of National Voters’ Day 2026 awareness activities.
