The Centre for Police Administration, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a special lecture on “Issues and challenges of Cyber Crime”, by Praveen Kumar Sinha, ADGP Cyber Crime Wing, Punjab Police, Punjab.

Chandigarh, October 11, 2023: The Centre for Police Administration, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a special lecture on “Issues and challenges of Cyber Crime”, by Praveen Kumar Sinha, ADGP Cyber Crime Wing, Punjab Police, Punjab. 
Prof. Anil Monga, Chairperson, Centre for Police Administration welcomed speaker of the day Sh. Praveen Kumar Sinha, ADGP Cyber Crime Wing,Punjab Police, Punjab and said that Cyber-crime is a crime which is growing at an alarming rate and requires urgent attention of the law enforcement agencies.

Praveen Kumar Sinha, ADGP Cyber Crime Wing, Punjab Police, Punjab while initiating the talk cautioned the audience that “when something is online available free, then you are not the customer, you are the product”.  According to him, cyber-crime is costing more than twice of GDP of India to world. He further said, that crimes are being so complex now a days that every crime includes use of technology making the task of Police investigating agencies very challenging. He also mentioned that in today’s world Data has become the new oil and India is the cheapest market in the world in terms of telecom industry.

While discussing various types and forms of cyber-crimes such as hacking, phishing, vishing, smishing, ransom ware, malware, identity theft, etc, he emphasized the need for remaining alert while using electronic devices such as: Computer, laptop, smart-tv, mobile phone and other smart electronic devices. Sharing from his personal experiences, being the head of the cyber-crime wing of Punjab police, he said that registering and investigation of the cyber-crime poses a serious challenge to law enforcement agencies as victim and perpetrator of the crime are some-times setting miles apart from each other in different cities or even some-times in different countries which brings jurisdictional issues for the police. He further pointed out that the existing laws are inadequate to deal with such situations and cases.

The lecture was attended by the Faculty, Research Scholars and students of Centre for Police Administration and was highly appreciated. 

The session ended with vote of thanks by Dr.Kuldeep Singh, Assistant Professor at the  Centre.
