Special lecture on “India as Reflected in Greek Literature” at PU
Dr Anil Kumar Singh, Professor, Greek Chair, School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Honorary President of the Indo-Hellenic Research Centre today delivered a special lecture on the theme “India as Reflected in Greek Literature” at Panjab University. The lecture was organised by the Punjabi Sahit Sabha, School of Punjabi Studies, Panjab University.
Chandigarh, 17 February 2026: Dr Anil Kumar Singh, Professor, Greek Chair, School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Honorary President of the Indo-Hellenic Research Centre today delivered a special lecture on the theme “India as Reflected in Greek Literature” at Panjab University. The lecture was organised by the Punjabi Sahit Sabha, School of Punjabi Studies, Panjab University.
In his lecture, Dr Anil discussed references to India in ancient Greek literature, historical records and travel accounts. He noted that both India and Greece possess long traditions of knowledge and philosophy, and that there has been sustained intellectual contact between the two civilisations. He emphasised that understanding these early interactions is important for a broader understanding of world history.
Earlier, the programme began with a welcome address by the department’s Chairperson, Prof. Yog Raj Angrish, who highlighted the academic importance of the topic. The session was conducted by Associate Professor Dr Paramjit Kaur Sidhu, who introduced the speaker and spoke about the relevance of the Greek intellectual tradition for students of language, literature and culture.
On the occasion, research scholar Gurcharan also shared information about the Greek Chair established at Jawaharlal Nehru University. The lecture was followed by a question-and-answer session, during which students and research scholars interacted with the speaker.
The programme concluded with the presentation of a memento to Dr Singh. Among those present were Prof. Dr Sarabjit Singh, Dr Akvinder Tanvi, Dr Pawan Kumar, Ravi Kumar and Jaspal Singh, along with a large number of research scholars and students. The lecture was well received by the audience.
