Karnal, September 9, 2026: Dr. Virender Singh Chauhan, Director of Haryana Institute of Rural Development (HIRD) has stressed the need to strengthen social audits to ensure transparency, accountability and public participation in rural development schemes.
He was speaking at the inauguration of a five-day training programme on social audit at the District Council, Karnal. Dr. Chauhan said social audits help verify development works, official records, beneficiaries and the actual ground-level implementation of government schemes.
He said the success of a welfare scheme should not be judged merely by the release of funds or completion of works. Ensuring that benefits reach genuine beneficiaries and maintaining the quality of development works are equally important.
Dr. Chauhan urged participants to understand the practical aspects of social auditing and effectively apply them in their respective areas. Resource persons Sanjeev Kumar and Sushma briefed participants on record verification, work-site inspection, beneficiary participation and other key aspects of the audit process.
The training will cover the concept, objectives and procedures of social audits and their role in strengthening transparency and accountability in rural development programmes. Several participants, including Pooja, Geeta, Rajnila and Priyanka, attended the programme.
