Recently, reports have emerged that seven Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha Members of Parliament have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), marking a significant political development in Punjab. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, widely regarded as the BJP’s key strategist and actively overseeing Punjab affairs, is said to have played a crucial role in strengthening the party’s position through this major political shift.
In the past few years, several prominent leaders from the Congress, including former Punjab Congress Chief Sunil Kumar Jakhar, former Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh, and other leaders such as Kewal Singh Dhillon, Rana Sodhi, and Preneet Kaur, have also joined the BJP, further boosting its presence in the state.
While BJP workers are celebrating these developments, the Aam Aadmi Party’s senior leadership is reportedly shocked by the resignation and defection of its Rajya Sabha MPs. The move has intensified political discussions around the upcoming Punjab Assembly Elections 2027 and the changing dynamics between major parties.
BJP National President Nitin Nabin has already indicated the party’s intention to contest all Assembly seats in 2027, ruling out any alliance with other political parties. In the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, AAP secured a massive mandate with 92 seats.
Senior BJP leaders, including State President Sunil Kumar Jakhar, Working President Ashwani Sharma, and former State President Manoranjan Kalia, have welcomed the new members into the party. They expressed confidence that BJP’s strength in Punjab will continue to grow and suggested that more leaders from other parties may join in the coming months.
