SCS holds session on research, felicitates chairperson for international best paper award

Chandigarh, March 24, 2026: The School of Communication Studies, Panjab University, organised a session on research featuring its senior faculty member and chairperson, Prof. Archana R Singh, who was also felicitated for receiving the best paper award at an international conference in Sri Lanka.
Dr Archana's award-winning paper, titled “Custodians of Culture: A Comparative Study of Human Narratives & AI Responses in the Context of Intangible Cultural Heritage”, was co-authored with Dr Anu Dua Sehgal and presented at the Staff Development Center (SDC), University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, during the International Conference on Global Challenges & Innovations, held from March 19–22. She also chaired a technical session at the conference.
At SCS, Assistant Professor Dr Sumedha Singh felicitated Dr Archana, calling the recognition a proud moment for the department.
Interacting with students, Prof. Archana spoke about her journey with the topic and addressed queries related to academic writing and methodology. Speaking about her paper, she said, “The study examines how oral narratives around customs and traditions are increasingly being replaced by AI-generated responses, particularly among younger generations. These responses are derived from patriarchal records that have been maintained throughout history, and in the process, the oral versions of octogenarian grandmothers are being lost.”
She added, “While AI offers accessibility, it often misses the nuance, context, and lived experience embedded in human storytelling, which are essential to preserving cultural heritage.”
Dr Sumedha Singh remarked, “Such achievements strengthen the research culture of the department and motivate students to engage more seriously with academic work.” She further noted that the true tribute to such scholarship lies in reading, understanding, and building upon it.
The session concluded with an engaging discussion, with students raising questions on AI, culture, and the importance of research in communication studies.
