Mumbai (Anil Bedag): The grand red carpet of the 79th Cannes Film Festival witnessed more than just glamour and fashion this year, it became a stage for a powerful message about women’s freedom, identity, and social change.
Bollywood actress Ruchi Gujjar grabbed global attention with her regal Rajasthani ghoonghat-inspired look, using it as a symbolic protest against the age-old practice of forcing women into veiling traditions.
Dressed in a stunning pink traditional lehenga adorned with intricate silver zari embroidery, along with authentic Rajasthani jewelry and a sheer ghoonghat, Ruchi beautifully celebrated Indian culture and heritage while also questioning whether traditions should suppress a woman’s identity and voice. Hailing from Rajasthan herself, Ruchi said, “I did not wear the ghoonghat to stay silent, but as a form of protest. Women deserve respect through equality, confidence, and freedom.”
The specially curated look, designed by Rupa Sharma, sparked massive discussions across social media and international fashion circles. Many praised it as one of India’s boldest and most socially impactful appearances at Cannes this year. With this appearance, Ruchi Gujjar did not just walk the red carpet, she compelled society to reflect and start a conversation.
