Rohtak, February 24, 2026: In today's time, the continuously increasing air, water and soil pollution is silently harming our body and increasing the risk of many chronic diseases as well as cancer. Although it is difficult to completely avoid pollution in the modern lifestyle, we can better protect our health by understanding its dangers and taking precautions.
Medical oncology expert Dr. Kumar Deep Dutta Chaudhary said that the biggest reason for this danger is air pollution. Fine particles in the air (PM 2.5), smoke from vehicles, factory smoke and toxic gases like benzene and formaldehyde enter our lungs with every breath, which can increase the risk of lung cancer, head and neck cancer and breast and bladder cancer.
Similarly, contaminated water, which contains arsenic, pesticides, industrial waste and heavy metals, can cause cancer related to liver, kidney, skin and digestive system. Pollution of soil and food is equally dangerous. Chemicals used in farming, plastic particles and industrial toxins enter the food chain, which in the long run increases the risk of hormone-related cancers and cancers of the digestive tract.
He said that cooking fumes, tobacco smoke, incense sticks, mosquito repellent coils and living in houses with poor ventilation expose family members, especially women and children, to cancer-causing substances. The most dangerous aspect is that its effects are not visible immediately. It slowly damages the body and may take years or decades for cancer to develop.
Dr. Kumar Deep said that it is helpful to avoid exercising outside in times of high pollution, use a mask when necessary and maintain good ventilation at home. It is also important to avoid smoking and not allow smoking inside the house. Adopting alternatives such as public transport, car pooling or walking can contribute to reducing pollution. It is also important to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating and avoid storing food in plastic.
In addition, a balanced diet including fruits, vegetables and whole grains, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding tobacco and limiting alcohol consumption strengthen the body's natural defenses. Describing regular health checkups as important, he said that if cancer is detected early, its treatment is more effective and the chances of saving life increases.
