Bathinda, August 9, 2025: The Central University of Punjab celebrated Rakshabandhan this year with a distinctive and eco-friendly initiative. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra Prasad Tiwari, along with women faculty members, students, and research scholars, tied raksha sutras (sacred threads) to culturally significant trees such as Peepal, Banyan, Amla, Sheesham, and Sukhchain in the campus ‘Panchvati’ area and other locations, expressing gratitude to nature for sustaining and protecting human life.

In addition to tying rakhis, 11 Maulshree saplings were planted in the Teachers’ Residential Complex. Notably, all activities—from tying rakhis to planting saplings—were carried out entirely by women teachers and students.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Tiwari stated that Rakshabandhan is not only a symbol of love, trust, and protection between brothers and sisters, but can also be associated with environmental conservation. “Just as we protect our loved ones, we must also safeguard life-giving trees that provide us with oxygen, food, medicines, and ecological balance,” he said. He urged everyone to pledge to protect the environment and preserve trees for the well-being of future generations.

Highlighting the growing threat of deforestation, Prof. Tiwari emphasised that increasing green cover is vital for maintaining clean air, biodiversity, and ecological stability. The saplings planted today, he noted, will one day offer beauty, shade, and oxygen to the campus community.

The programme saw enthusiastic participation from the university fraternity and was widely appreciated as an inspiring step towards promoting environmental awareness and conservation.
