QS World Rankings for 2018 released: Panjab University (rank 18, slot 801-1000)

Chandigarh, June 8, 2017: QS World Rankings for 2018 have been released in which total 21 Indian universities and Institutes find a place in the top 1000. Among all 21 universities listed, total 9 are Technical Institutes (8 IITs & BITS Pilani), 4 are Central Universities, 7 are State Universities and one is Private. Among the universities, top university is Delhi University (DU) (rank 8, slot 481-490). Among non-Central universities, the top is University of Jadavpur(rank 10,slot 601-650) followed by University of Calcutta (rank 14, slot 751-800 ), Panjab University (rank 18, slot 801-1000) followed by University of Mumbai(rank 19, slot 801-1000). Indian premier Institute, having highest NAAC score and NIRF ranking JNU, is placed at number 21.

According to Indian Universities Act,1904 which applied to first 5 Universities including Calcutta, Mumbai , Madras , PU Lahore and Allahabad , only three have figured in this list of top 1000.

The Ranking Parameters are: Employer (10% weightage); Academic Reputations (40% weightage) were calculated by QS on the basis of inputs from a chosen group of employers and academics. Citations and research data (20% weightage) was taken by QS
from SCOPUS for the past five years, divided by the faculty strength and then normalized for different subjects according to norms that have not been made public.

International Faculty (5% weightage), International Students (5% weightage) marks were not mentioned by QS for Indian universities.

All Universities have their unique strengths and get different scores as per different criteria’s and parameters. But, it is a matter of satisfaction that PU is consistently being ranked among the top universities of the country by different rankings, PU Spokesperson added.

PU Vice Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover has expressed satisfaction that despite various challenges, the University has been able to maintain its position in the QS rankings.
