Chandigarh, November 22, 2022: A Public Lecture was organized by the Indian Society of International Law (ISIL), at its New Delhi headquarters and was delivered yesterday evening by Dr. Jyoti Rattan, Professor of Law, Panjab University, Chandigarh on the topic “Equal Treatment: Law Relating To Right To Be Forgotten (RTBF); An Examination Of Some Judicial Decisions With Special Reference To The European Union And India.” Dr. Anwar Sadat, Senior Assistant Professor, ISIL, was the Moderator. The Society is a professional body including among others, Diplomats, senior Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) officials, Supreme Court Advocates practicing International Law, and Professors of International Law across the country as its members.

She pointed out that since the internet has no national boundaries, the negative impact of social media is being felt by the people in India too and due to the ill-effects of social media and other online platforms, India too needs a Right To Be Forgotten (RTBF) law urgently. Many other countries already have such a law to protect individuals from this new 21st Century problem and affected citizens can get incorrect information instantly deleted which may be circulating on virtual platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and Google, which has serious implications in the real world also.

Dr. Jyoti Rattan is a well-known expert in International Law, Cyber Law, and Taxation Laws and has written 22 books in various fields of Law. The Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, Supreme Court, New Delhi had penned the foreword to her book on Cyber Laws and Information Technology (6th Edition). Earlier, she had given an invited presentation on Cyber Violence Against Women before the National Commission for Women, New Delhi.
