PU Introduces RFID-Based Smart ID Cards to Enhance Campus Security

Panjab University today rolled out the first lot of 200 RFID Smart Identity Cards for PU faculty and staff members. PU Registrar, Prof. Y. P. Verma handed over the cards to the staff members, which marked a significant step towards the adoption of advanced technology for campus management and security. The project shall be very soon extended to students as well, and entry into the campus will be strictly governed through RFID cards and scanning systems.

Chandigarh, March 25, 2026: Panjab University today rolled out the first lot of 200 RFID Smart Identity Cards for PU faculty and staff members. PU Registrar, Prof. Y. P. Verma handed over the cards to the staff members, which marked a significant step towards the adoption of advanced technology for campus management and security. The project shall be very soon extended to students as well, and entry into the campus will be strictly governed through RFID cards and scanning systems.
The distribution ceremony was attended by the Controller of Examinations, Prof. Jagat Bhushan; RFID Committee Chairperson, Prof. Sonal Chawla; PUTA President, Prof. Amarjit Naura; PUTA Secretary, Dr. Mritunjay Kumar; PUSA Representative; Deputy Registrar (Establishment); Assistant Registrar (Establishment), along with other IT Cell officials.
Harminder Khatana, Randeep Chaudhary and Er. Puneet Singh from WSS Security Solution Pvt. Ltd. were also present to deliver services as per the contract.
On the occasion, Prof. Verma appreciated the dedicated efforts of the committee members in driving the transformation towards technology-enabled systems for public use. He also applauded the role of Director, Computer Center, Prof. Sonal Chawla and the team for their commendable work in data collection and system implementation.
The Registrar emphasised that the introduction of RFID smart cards will significantly enhance campus security, help in regulating and restricting unauthorised entry, and contribute towards strict surveillance by streamlining vehicle movement. He added that these cards shall bring additional benefits, including efficient access control, improved monitoring, and seamless identification of authorised personnel.
The RFID system is designed to function in both online and offline modes, with QR code support, and is directly integrated with the central server database to ensure real-time as well as fallback operational capability.
