Inclusive Independence Day Celebration at MDU; Patriotic Songs in Sign Language Steal the Show

Rohtak, August 15, 2026: MDU’s Centre for Disability Studies organised an inclusive Independence Day celebration, bringing together students, deaf educators and representatives of around 10 prominent deaf institutions and associations from across Haryana, including the Rohtak Association of Deaf and Dumb.
The programme began with flag hoisting. Chief Guest Himanshu Grover lauded the university’s efforts towards empowering persons with disabilities and stressed the need to ensure equal opportunities and their meaningful inclusion in mainstream society.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Milap Puniya said MDU was committed to providing equal opportunities and inclusive education to students with disabilities. Registrar Prof. Sandeep Bansal called for building an inclusive society based on equal rights, dignity and opportunities.
The highlight of the celebration was a performance by Chandigarh-based dancer Ashima, a five-time national award winner. Students of the Centre for Disability Studies then presented patriotic songs in Indian Sign Language, adding a deeply moving and inclusive dimension to the celebrations.
Centre Director Prof. Pratima Devi welcomed the guests and participants, while Additional Director Prof. Yogender Kumar proposed the vote of thanks. The programme concluded with the national anthem, conveying a strong message of equality, inclusion and equal participation in the nation’s celebrations.
