PU Department of Life Long Learning and Extension Marks International Women’s Day
The Department of Life Long Learning and Extension, Panjab University (PU) today celebrated the “International Women’s Day”. Faculty members, students and staff of the department participated in the programme.
Chandigarh, March 11, 2026: The Department of Life Long Learning and Extension, Panjab University (PU) today celebrated the “International Women’s Day”. Faculty members, students and staff of the department participated in the programme.
Dr. Parmjit Singh Kang in his lecture spoke on the theme of International Women’s Day 2026, “Give to Gain,” which highlights the importance of generosity, collaboration and mutual empowerment in advancing gender equality. He also explained the historical evolution of the observance, noting that the day was officially recognised by the United Nations in 1975, though its origins date back to the early twentieth century labour movements advocating women’s rights and better working conditions.
Dr. Kang noted that International Women’s Day recognises the cultural, social, political and economic contributions of women. He added that the day is also recognised by the United Nations as a day dedicated to women’s rights and international peace.
Emphasising the importance of women’s empowerment, Dr. Kang stated that education plays a crucial role and highlighted that the principles of equality are reflected in the Charter of Human Rights and the Constitution of India, which accord significant importance to women’s rights. He further underlined the need to promote education along with skill development opportunities for women.
