Chandigarh, January 20, 2026: Panjab University, Department of Education, organised a lecture-cum-workshop on “Building Creativity: How ‘Making’ Can Support Critical Thinking and Creative Thinking.”
The programme featured Prof. Rachel Sheffield, Curtin University, Perth, Australia, along with Prof. Rekha Kaul, Professor of Science Education, Discipline Lead in STEM and Deputy Head, School of Education, Curtin University.
Prof. Rachel Sheffield highlighted the growing importance of core competencies such as analytical thinking, resilience, flexibility, and cognitive skills in 2025. She observed that individuals who are not prepared to think independently and learn autonomously risk becoming dependent on others’ ideas.
The workshop included hands-on activity designed to translate theory into practice. Each group was assigned the task of constructing a two-metre-long pipeline incorporating one right angle and three angles greater than 30 degrees. The structure was required to rest on the table and allow a ping-pong ball to pass through without obstruction or external force.
Participants enthusiastically applied logical reasoning and several groups successfully completed the task.
Concluding the session, Prof. Rachel Sheffield explained the underlying principles of physics and mathematics involved in the activity.
