Chandigarh, June 10, 2026: The Department-cum-National Centre for Human Genome Studies and Research (NCHGSR), Panjab University, Chandigarh, proudly celebrates the achievement of its distinguished alumnus, Dr. Amar Deep, who has joined the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali, as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences.
Dr. Amar Deep completed his M.Sc. in Human Genomics from Panjab University in Year 2013. He completed his Ph.D. in Structural Biology from CSIR–Institute of Microbial Technology (CSIR-IMTech), Chandigarh, in 2020. His exceptional doctoral research earned him the prestigious Dr. V. C. Vora Best Ph.D. Thesis Award.
Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Deep pursued postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Diego, USA, from 2020 to 2025. He subsequently joined IISER Mohali in July 2025, marking another significant milestone in his academic journey.
His scholarly contributions are reflected in publications in several internationally acclaimed journals, including Nature, Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, and Molecular Cell. His research integrates structural biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and microbiology to investigate novel bacterial defense systems that exhibit similarities to eukaryotic innate immune pathways.
Utilizing expertise in structural biology, biochemistry, and microbiology, Dr. Deep's laboratory aims to uncover the molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial immune defense systems. His pioneering work has the potential for engineering robust bacteriophages to treat drug-resistant bacterial infections and for developing new tools for genome engineering.
The Department takes immense pride in Dr. Deep's accomplishments and wishes him continued success in his teaching, research, and scientific endeavors. His journey exemplifies the excellence of Panjab University's alumni and serves as an inspiration for young researchers and students.
