Nilokheri, March 10, 2026: Geographic information systems are playing a vital role in the effective implementation of rural development plans. This was stated by Dr. Virender Singh Chauhan, Director of the Haryana Institute of Rural Development (HIRD) while addressing the participants at a training program on ‘the role of geographic information systems in rural development planning’.
Dr. Chauhan inaugurated the program by lighting a lamp. He said that proper use of technology has brought transparency to development work and curbed corruption. However, sometimes various obstacles arise in its use, and we must find solutions and better ways to overcome them so that the full benefits of technology can be reaped in rural development plans. He urged participants to expand their skills after leaving and effectively utilize these technologies in their respective fields.
HIRD Director Dr. Chauhan informed the participants about various important schemes of the Central Government. Speaking about the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY), he said that the scheme aims to provide better irrigation facilities to farmers and effectively manage water resources, achieving the goal of providing water to every farm. He also spoke about the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), saying that through this scheme, pucca houses are being provided to needy families, improving their quality of life.
Emphasizing the importance of the Hindi language, Dr. Chauhan said, "We are residents of Haryana, and Haryana is a Hindi-speaking state. Hindi is also the official language of India, so we should use our language with self-respect and pride."
He urged participants to start signing in Hindi and use it more often in their daily lives, both for official purposes and in their daily lives. He said that people often unknowingly consider speaking in English a symbol of literacy, whereas our language, Hindi, is much richer and simpler than English. He emphasized that Hindi is a relatively more scientific and intuitive language. During this, participants also took a pledge to use Hindi.
The program was coordinated by HIRD faculty member Kamaldeep Sangwan. Additional Block Program Officer Dr. Suresh, Jaswinder Gill, Sandeep Sharma, Chandrapal, Dinesh, Mahesh Kumar, along with participants from Ambala, Kurukshetra, Yamunanagar, Karnal, Panchkula, Panipat, Sonipat, and Kaithal districts were present.
