Prime Minister Narendra Modi achieved a significant political milestone on June 10, 2026, by surpassing the post-election tenure record of India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Nehru held the record for serving 4,398 days as Prime Minister following democratic elections, while Narendra Modi completed 4,399 days in office on June 10, 2026.
Apart from his tenure as Prime Minister, Narendra Modi served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from October 2001 to May 2014. Combining his years as Chief Minister and Prime Minister, Modi has remained in elected executive office for more than 9,000 days, making him one of the longest-serving political leaders in contemporary Indian history. Notably, he continues to serve as Prime Minister while maintaining a prominent role on the global stage and advocating for peace and international cooperation.
Before becoming Chief Minister of Gujarat, Modi served as the National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In 1990, he actively participated in the Ram Rath Yatra from Somnath to Ayodhya, a significant political movement in India's modern political history.
Prime Minister Modi is widely recognized for his vision of building a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India) by 2047. His government has focused extensively on infrastructure development, including roads, national highways, expressways, railway modernization, and the expansion of the Vande Bharat train network. Major connectivity projects, including the railway links connecting Jammu with Srinagar and the Bairabi–Sairang railway line in Mizoram, have been highlighted as important achievements in strengthening national integration.
Under Modi's leadership, India has emphasized self-reliance through initiatives such as "Make in India," particularly in defence manufacturing, digital payments, industrial growth, science and technology, and space exploration. Successful missions undertaken by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), along with advancements in satellite technology, railway manufacturing, and electric locomotives, have contributed to India's technological progress.
India's foreign policy during Modi's tenure has focused on strengthening diplomatic and economic relations with countries across the world. Through numerous international visits and engagements, the Prime Minister has sought to enhance cooperation in trade, technology, investment, and strategic affairs. Despite global economic uncertainties, India has continued to maintain robust economic growth and has emerged as one of the world's fastest-growing major economies.
The government has also pursued reforms in taxation, industrial policy, agriculture, and governance. Programmes such as Start-Up India, Stand-Up India, Digital India, and various welfare initiatives have been aimed at promoting entrepreneurship, innovation, and inclusive development.
Politically, Modi's leadership has coincided with a significant expansion of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). When he assumed office as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014, the NDA was in power in only a handful of states. Over the years, the alliance expanded its political footprint considerably across the country.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, often regarded as a key strategist of the BJP, has played an important role alongside Modi in the party's organizational growth and electoral successes. The Modi-Shah partnership, which began during their years in Gujarat, continues to be a defining feature of the BJP's political strategy and governance model.
As Narendra Modi surpasses this historic tenure milestone, his political journey remains a subject of significant interest in India's contemporary political landscape.
