Peaceful Sikh Nagar Kirtan Attacked in New Zealand, Global Outrage Over Assault on Religious Freedom: Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal Bhukhri Kalan

Ludhiana, 22 December 2025: National BJP leader Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal Bhukhri Kalan said that he strongly condemns, without dilution or apology, the shameful disruption of the peaceful Nagar Kirtan procession in South Auckland, New Zealand.

Grewal wrote on his social account X that this disgraceful act was not a protest, not dissent, and not activism, but a direct assault on human decency, religious freedom, faith, dignity, and the most basic civilised values. He stated that those who interfered with the Nagar Kirtan exposed themselves as ignorant, intolerant and morally bankrupt elements who have no respect for religion or coexistence.

Grewal told that Nagar Kirtan is a sacred Sikh tradition, a divine and joyous procession carrying the hymns of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj, spreading devotion, unity, peace and blessings for all humanity. He said it is not a street spectacle, not a political stage, and certainly not a playground for hateful troublemakers. He added that anyone who dares to target such a sacred tradition deserves public condemnation and firm legal consequences.

He said that these so-called activists attempted to turn a holy celebration into a vulgar and shocking display of disrespect, and their actions reflect zero culture, zero tolerance, and zero humanity. He made it clear that such people are a threat to social harmony and religious liberty in any democratic society.

Grewal further said that the Sikh community’s response, marked by extraordinary restraint, discipline, and peace, stands as a powerful example of the Guru Sahib’s teachings of Chardi Kala and Sarbat Da Bhala. He reminded that the same Sikh community selflessly served humanity across the world during the Covid crisis, without discrimination, without noise, and without hatred.

He said that while the community responded with dignity, this intimidation cannot be normalised or ignored. Such acts directly endanger religious freedom and poison the spirit of universal brotherhood. He categorically stated that any weakness in dealing with such incidents will only embolden extremists and repeat offenders.

Grewal demanded that the Government of India take this matter seriously at the highest diplomatic level and ensure that the Government of New Zealand enforces strict, visible, and uncompromising measures to protect the rights, safety and religious freedom of the Indian diaspora.

He said that justice delayed or diluted will be an insult to the Sikh community and to every person who believes in freedom of faith. He called for immediate action, firm accountability and zero tolerance for attacks on sacred traditions.
