Patent rights clause be waived off during the pandemic crisis - IDPD

Ludhiana: Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) has strongly criticized the statement of Bill Gates in which he has said that the developing countries should not be transferred technology for making vaccines. In this hour of global crisis such a statement amounts to genocidal tendencies. Already due to changes in the Intellectual Property Rights under the WTO it has become difficult for the developing countries to manufacture medicines and vaccines. In a statement Dr S S Soodan – President, Dr Arun Mitra – Senior Vice President and Dr Shakeel Ur Rahman – General Secretary of the IDPD have demanded that Indian government should immediately approach the UN for waiving off the patent rights clause which prohibits the developing countries from making new drugs. It is also required to review the policy of the present BJP government to close down the public sector units in pharmaceuticals and vaccines even though they have served the nation during health emergencies in the past.
