Chandigarh, February 7, 2023: Panjab University organized its prestigious Colloquium lecture today.  The distinguished speaker was Dr. Ratna Ghosh who is a Jame McGill Professor and William C. Macdonald Professor of Education at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.  She was appointed as member of the Order of Canada in 2000 and Order of Quebec in 2005 and was elected as Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.  She has done extensive research in Canada, Asia, Africa and Latin America. Her work on education and equity for women and other minority groups has won her many awards and honours.  Professor Ghoshwas featured in the Canadian edition of  Times magazine in 2003 as one of “Canada Best in Education”.

The topic of her lecture was “Gender Mainstreaming” which she defined as a strategy to level the playing field which implies basically policies to reduce gender inequalities in society. Prof. Ghosh expounded on this strategy in terms of  systematic integration of gender perspectives in policies, programmes and thematic issues at different levels such as policy level, institutional level and programme level.  Basically, moving from the periphery to the centre.  Moreover, she stressed that the most important factor  is attitude-political, social  and individual.  Gender mainstreaming  is a multi-pronged approach  and this kind of approach requires the involvement of not only governments but NGOs, Community and the family.  She ended by saying that a country’s strength is its women and inclusion is fundamental to human dignity.

Dean, Research &Development  Cell, Professor  Yojna Rawat and Professor Monica Munjial Singh, Co-ordinator Colloquium were present during the event along with the faculty members, research scholars and students from various departments.

It was followed by the interaction of Prof. Ashok Vijh, Department of Chemistry, McGill University with the officials of Panjab University and the faculty members of Chemistry Department. He is an alumnus of this department. Prof Renu Vig felicitated  the highly decorated Professor. The academic gathering exchanged notes on the ongoing research in Panjab University. He was awarded Honorary Doctorate by Panjab University.
