Over 28,000 hit as Sutlej floods ravage Ferozepur; 3,400 rescued
Rising waters of the Sutlej have thrown life out of gear in Ferozepur, affecting more than 28,000 people across 112 villages. With vast stretches of land marooned, the district administration, backed by the Army, NDRF, BSF, and Punjab Police, has stepped up massive relief and rescue operations. So far, 3,410 people have been evacuated to safety.

Ferozepur, September 1, 2025: Rising waters of the Sutlej have thrown life out of gear in Ferozepur, affecting more than 28,000 people across 112 villages. With vast stretches of land marooned, the district administration, backed by the Army, NDRF, BSF, and Punjab Police, has stepped up massive relief and rescue operations. So far, 3,410 people have been evacuated to safety.
Deputy Commissioner Deepshikha Sharma said relief camps have been set up to house displaced families, where food, drinking water, dry ration, and fodder for cattle are being supplied without interruption. At Bareke, over 250 flood victims sheltered in a government school are receiving three daily meals along with medical care, while additional health camps have been established in Bagge Wala, Fatte Wala, Nihala Lavera, Jallo Ke, and Fatehgarh Sabhra.
“To prevent further breaches, embankments at Rukne Wala and Mehmood Wala villages have been fortified, and water is being pumped out of the Makhu canal to check siltation. In Dheera-Ghara, essential rations were ferried to stranded residents via boats. The Veterinary Department has also deployed special teams for livestock treatment and fodder distribution in affected areas”, said DC.
The DC said officials working in flood-hit zones are being provided with essentials like clothes, blankets, and sanitary items to continue operations smoothly. She directed all field staff to remain on high alert for possible fresh rainfall and ensure timely support to affected villagers.
