Over 100 Visually Impaired Persons Receive Ai enabled Smart Vision Glasses at Panjab University

Chandigarh, February 13, 2026: More than 100 persons with visual impairment were provided AI-enabled Smart Vision Glasses at an assistive technology distribution programme at the Panjab University, here today. The programme was organised by the at the Evening Studies Auditorium in Sector 14, PU Campus.
The initiative was taken by the Department of Sociology, Panjab University in collaboration with Blind Vision Foundation under Project Drishti Parivartan and supported under the CSR initiative of HDFC Bank through the Parivartan Small Grants Programme 2025–26, marking a step towards accessibility and digital inclusion.
The programme was graced by the PU Vice Chancellor Prof Renu Vig. Chief Guest Madhavi Kataria, IAS, appreciated the collaborative effort and said technology can strengthen inclusive development. Senior officers Ajay Arora, IAS was present. Jagroop Singh represented Bharat Cares.
The Smart Vision Glasses are designed for persons who are completely blind. The device captures images through an inbuilt camera and converts them into audio output. Features include reading mode supporting 59 Indian regional languages, currency detection, facial recognition, AI-enabled voice assistant and navigation assistance.
The event was conducted under the leadership of Dr Vinod Kumar Choudhary, Chairperson, Department of Sociology. Support was extended by Anant, Psychiatric Social Welfare Officer, Department of Prisons; Prof Ramesh Kataria; and the Equal Opportunity Cell – Persons with Disability Cell, PU. Naresh Kumar, MA History student and Executive Member of EOC, Prof Ramesh Kataria, Coordinator, and Narindra Luthra, Superintendent, assisted in coordination.
The assistive devices were manufactured by SGH Technologies, led by CEO Ramu Muthangi. The implementation was carried out by Blind Vision Foundation, Bengaluru, coordinated by Gopi Krishna and Rahul, with additional support from Bharat Cares.
Faculty members including Prof Kumool Abbi, Prof Rani Mehta, Dr Medhavi Gulati and Dr Shamsher Singh, Prof Vandana Maini, attended the programme. MA first and second year students, research scholars Amrit Pal Singh and Diwan Sheoran, and department office staff assisted in organising the event.
