Ludhiana, October 2, 2022: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti Municipal corporation, Ludhiana empowered 18 SHGs and conducted a wonderful initiative “Mera Jhola meri Pehchaan” at the main Sabzi Mandi, Bahadurke Road, Ludhiana.

To promote and practise the concept of reuse and Recycle , cloth bags are being made by women of the self-help groups under national urban livelihood mission, registered with the MC Ludhiana, by using waste clothes left after tailoring activities or from wholesale stock in order to upcycle them into jholas.

The commissioner of Municipal Corporation, Dr Shena Aggarwal  formally inaugurated the event and met the members of the SHGs, saw their products and encouraged them to keep working towards the  cause.

Joint Commissioner Dr Poonam Preet Kaur worked  with the members of various  SHGs of NULM, met them and understood their need for a sustained source of income. She said that Textile waste is a rising issue and with this approach, the issues of single-use bags and plastic pollution were tackled  and sustainable livelihoods for the SHGs were ensured.

At the event, Dr Poonam alongwith NULM officials and SHGs and the  health branch team conducted munadi through the mandi on the beat of a dhol in the entire  area where sellers and customers were encouraged to buy cloth bags from the SHGs and the harmful effects of using polybags were highlighted.

The joint commissioner informed that the health branch team shall hold a meeting with the mandi groups to ensure that no polybags are used in the premises of the mandis and that the NULM Staff shall ensure that the campaign is taken to every market and mandi gradually.

As of now, the kiosks have been put at various mandis like Daresi, Gill Canal, Bapu Market, Vardhaman, Kakowal Road, BRS Nagar, Rahon Road, Dana Mandi, Jalandhar Bypass Sabzi Mandi and plans to install kiosks at other mandis are underway.

The   CSO Ashwani told  that the health branch teams regularly visit different areas of the city to carry out  challaning  for single use plastic while also conducting awareness activities.

On this occasion, CSIs, NULM staff, CDO and Community facilitators were present.

It’s a truly a  beginning of making Ludhiana an epitome of cleanliness through the green initiatives being undertaken by the MC Ludhiana.
