Bhopal, July 8 (IANS) The Madhya Pradesh Congress on Wednesday sought a white paper on the state's financial condition, claiming that the state's outstanding debt has crossed Rs 5 lakh crore due to continuous borrowings by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.

In a statement, Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Jitu Patwari claimed that the state's outstanding debt stood at Rs 4,88,714.17 crore as of March 31, 2026, and has crossed Rs 5 lakh crore following fresh borrowings.

According to Patwari, the state government has raised a fresh loan of Rs 3,600 crore by issuing government securities through the Reserve Bank of India.

He claimed that with this borrowing, the state's total loans in the current financial year (2026-27) have reached Rs 12,800 crore.

Patwari said the state government has already borrowed Rs 12,800 crore this financial year and plans to raise Rs 78,500 crore during 2026-27. He added that the people have the right to know why the government continues to rely on loans.

The Congress leader questioned the impact of the borrowings on the state's economy and public welfare. He claimed that despite the rising debt burden, farmers continue to face shortages of fertilisers and irrigation facilities, unemployment remains a concern, and the education and healthcare sectors have not improved.

Patwari said that despite such huge borrowings, farmers are not getting adequate support, youth are struggling to find jobs, and development works have slowed. He added that the government should explain where the borrowed money is being spent.

Seeking greater transparency, the Congress demanded that the state government disclose details of its borrowings and expenditure.

Patwari demanded that the chief minister issue a white paper on the state's economy, make the complete details of all loans taken public, explain where the money has been spent, and present a roadmap to bring Madhya Pradesh out of its debt burden.

The Congress said it would continue to raise the issue of the state's financial management and seek accountability over the rising debt.

There was no immediate response from the state government to the Congress's claims.
