Modi Should Fulfil His Own Promise of Depositing ₹15 Lakh into People's Accounts Instead of Questioning Punjab: Parminder Mehta

Ludhiana, July 18, 2026: Senior Punjab leader and former councillor Parminder Mehta took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks during his Punjab visit, where he questioned the deposit of ₹1,000–1,500 into the bank accounts of women in the state. Mehta said, "Modi Sahib, instead of questioning Punjab, you should first fulfil your own promise of depositing ₹15 lakh into every citizen's bank account."
Speaking to select journalists at his office in Daresi, Mehta alleged that during demonetisation, the Prime Minister deprived women of the savings they had set aside for difficult times. "With what face is he now talking about the welfare of women?"
Holding the Central Government responsible for the inflow of drugs into Punjab, Mehta said the state shares an international border and that despite the expansion of the Border Security Force's jurisdiction, narcotics continue to enter from Pakistan through the border or via Gujarat's ports without proper checks, before being supplied to Punjab and other states.
Mehta alleged that the Modi government has treated Punjab unfairly from the very beginning. "The Centre keeps talking about Punjab's debt, but has it provided even a single rupee in meaningful assistance to the state? Even after announcing relief during the floods, no substantial help was extended," he claimed.
He further stated that the Prime Minister's visit was purely political in nature and alleged that it was merely an unsuccessful attempt by the BJP to explore political opportunities in Punjab.
