Modernization of Irrigation System in Ludhiana, Malerkotla and Fatehgarh Sahib under MCAD Scheme

Ludhiana, March 12, 2026: A meeting regarding the Modernization of Command Area Development and Water Management (MCAD) Project was held. Detailed discussions were conducted on the implementation of the proposed Pressurized pipe irrigation network system under MCAD in the district.
Through this project, modern irrigation facilities will be extended to a total of 1388 hectares across six villages of different three districts adjoining to each other. Under the project, the old borewell irrigation will be replaced by a modern pressurized pipe irrigation network, significantly enhancing water-use efficiency and saving groundwater that is depleting at large scale day by day.
The meeting was attended by Superintending Engineer Navjot Singh, State Nodal Officer for MCAD, Executive engineer Naman Jain and representatives from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Rajesh Kumar and Rohit Sharma, along with officials from the Agriculture Department, Horticulture Department, Soil and Water conservation Department, Punjab Agriculture University, CSIR New Delhi and IT Department and EIT Technologies, Bangalore.
During the meeting, instructions were issued to the Agriculture and Horticulture Departments to arrange local level meetings where farmers will be informed about the benefits of the project and encouraged towards crop diversification to ensure optimal and effective utilization of the irrigation system. Also, instructions were also issued to the Horticulture department to identify horticulture clusters, converge with micro irrigation schemes.
