Chandigarh: On the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, observed globally on July 28, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, emphasises on the importance of raising awareness about viral hepatitis and lifestyle-related liver diseases. The initiative aims to educate the public on early diagnosis and timely medical intervention to prevent chronic liver damage.
Viral hepatitis remains a significant public health challenge globally. There are five types Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E, each differing in transmission modes and severity. Chronic Hepatitis B and C, in particular, pose the highest risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer if not diagnosed and treated early.
Dr. Mukesh K Rathore, Principal Consultant, Gastroenterology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, said, “Hepatitis B and C continue to silently damage the liver in many individuals, often without noticeable symptoms until the disease has significantly progressed. In addition, alcohol consumption and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease remain the major contributors to liver damage in India.”
Dr. Rathore further stressed the importance of vaccinations, timely medical care, and regular screening, and said, “Vaccination remains our strongest defence against Hepatitis A and B. With the availability of highly effective antiviral medications, Hepatitis C is now curable in most cases. Unfortunately, many individuals remain unaware that they may be living with chronic hepatitis. Early detection and timely treatment can prevent complications like liver failure and cancer.”
Dr. Rathore also advised that lifestyle plays a vital role in liver health. Adopting a balanced diet, staying physically active, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco are crucial to preventing liver-related complications.
Early detection, timely intervention, and greater awareness about hepatitis and liver diseases can significantly reduce the burden of chronic liver conditions. On World Hepatitis Day, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali reaffirms its commitment to delivering advanced liver care and driving community education to promote a healthier future.
