Lyallpur Khalsa College Celebrates 75 Years of Punjabi Department Excellence
Platinum Jubilee Marks Seven and a Half Decades of Contribution to Punjabi Language, Literature and Culture
Jalandhar, March 20, 2026: The Post-Graduate Punjabi Department of Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar, celebrated its Platinum Jubilee on March 19–20, 2026, marking 75 glorious years since its establishment. The milestone event highlighted the department’s long-standing contribution to Punjabi language, literature, and culture. The first day of the celebrations was dedicated to a series of academic and cultural activities focusing on the richness and evolution of Punjabi heritage, while the second day featured vibrant cultural programmes, interactive sessions, and theatrical performances that drew enthusiastic participation.
At the beginning of the second day’s programme, Balbir Kaur, President of the College Governing Council, warmly welcomed all attendees. She described the Punjabi Department as the pride of the institution and a nurturing ground that has produced eminent personalities across various domains of the Punjabi world. Principal Dr. Rashpal Singh Sandhu addressed the gathering, highlighting that the department is among the pioneering ones, having started M.A. Punjabi classes as early as 1950. He emphasized that scholars associated with the department have carved a distinct identity in Punjabi language and literature, significantly contributing to the college’s global recognition.
The Chief Guest on the occasion was Laljit Singh Bhullar, who underscored the urgent need for collective efforts to promote the mother tongue Punjabi in the modern era. He expressed pride in the department’s 75-year journey of promoting Punjabi language, literature, and culture. He also acknowledged the department as a hub of distinguished scholar-teachers, writers, and artists who have earned global acclaim. Calling it an honour, he appreciated being part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
The event was graced by several distinguished guests, including Navjot Kaur, Chairperson of PEDA; Kanwardeep Singh, Chairperson of the Child Rights Commission, Punjab; Dr. Manjinder Singh, Head of the School of Punjabi Studies at Guru Nanak Dev University; Dr. Harbans Singh Bolina; and Dr. Baljit Kaur Riar. The dignitaries were accorded a Guard of Honour by NCC cadets and felicitated with bouquets and mementos by the Principal and Head of Department Dr. Harjinder Singh Sekhon. All guests extended their heartfelt congratulations and best wishes on the landmark occasion.
Students added vibrancy to the celebrations with a wide array of performances. A thought-provoking Nukkad Natak on social issues, traditional comedic acts like Bhandan Diya Naklan, and mesmerizing folk songs and Giddha performances captivated the audience. A special theatrical presentation of Tiktan Do Lai Lai, directed by Narinder Sanghi in collaboration with Punjab Kala Parishad, was a major highlight, featuring renowned film actors Hardeep Gill and Anita Devgan.
In addition, a heritage village display and a book exhibition featuring around 12 publishers were organized on both days, offering visitors a glimpse into Punjabi traditions and literary richness. The celebrations concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Harjinder Singh Sekhon, expressing gratitude to all guests, participants, and organizers for making the Platinum Jubilee a grand success.
