Ludhiana, October 9, 2013: The number of the world's population reaching old age and living to the age of 80 or 90 years is increasing dramatically, thanks to better healthcare and lifestyle. According to WHO, the population of people over 60 is 800 million across the world with females outnumbering males. This figure is projected to cross two billion in 2050. In keeping with this, the World Mental Health day which falls on 10th October, 2013 focuses on the well being of this ageing population with the theme “Mental Health and Older Adults”.
The elderly have varied physical health problems like cardiopulmonary illnesses, joint and skeletal disorders, hypertension, diabetes, neurological illnesses etc. What is less emphasized is the problem of mental health, that they face. This age group loses the capacity for independent living at some stage and require long term care. They are often the target of ill treatment or neglect by family or caregivers. They may suffer physical as well as mental abuse. In addition they also bear the burden of mental disorders like Depression and Anxiety disorders. Dementia is an illness unique to this age group and poses one of the greatest health challenges of our times. On a psychological front, they may experience poverty, isolation, bereavement and loss of functioning, said Dr. Navkiran S. Mahajan, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, DMC&H.
The need of the hour is to promote healthy ageing. We are plagued by stereotypes against ageing e.g. old people are weak or slow and that they cannot work or be productive. This tends to segregate and isolate them. Good mental health and well being in old age can be promoted by encouraging healthy ageing practices which should start early in life. We should maintain strong personal relationships throughout life and keep participating in meaningful activities. The elderly should stay mentally and physically active. Smoking, drug and alcohol use should be avoided at any cost. Physical as well as mental problems should be dealt with in a timely manner. As a society we need to take measures to prevent isolation of this age group and also be vigilant about their maltreatment and abuse. They can enjoy the best quality mental health within the warmth of their homes and within the folds of the society they live in, said Dr. Ranjive Mahajan, Professor & Head, Department of Psychiatry, DMC&H.  www.cityairnews.com
