In preparation for a smooth and successful first phase of India's landmark Digital Census 2027, a comprehensive two-day training programme began on Monday for charge census officers and technical assistants at Bachat Bhawan.

Ludhiana, March 16, 2026: In preparation for a smooth and successful first phase of India's landmark Digital Census 2027, a comprehensive two-day training programme began on Monday for charge census officers and technical assistants at Bachat Bhawan. 
The training provided in-depth guidance on all aspects of Digital Census Phase-1 under which House Listing and Housing Census will be held from May 15 to June 13, 2026 using a fully digital, app-based system. Key topics included the Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) portal, House Listing Operations Management, orientation on the House Listing Block Creation application, Self-Enumeration (SE) Portal, and other operational tools.
Participants actively engaged in sessions, with all queries addressed comprehensively to ensure readiness.
In Ludhiana, more than 6,000 enumerators will be deployed for the house listing exercise. Enumerators will visit households door-to-door and ask 33 specific questions focused on housing conditions, amenities, and household assets: these include the building number and Census house number, predominant material of the floor, wall, and roof of the Census house, ascertain use of the Census house, condition of the Census house, household number, total number of persons normally residing in the household, name, sex, and category (Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe/Other) of the head of the household, ownership status of the Census house, number of dwelling rooms exclusively in possession of the household, number of married couple(s) living in the household, main source of drinking water and its availability, main source of lighting, access to latrine and type of latrine, waste water outlet, availability of bathing facility, availability of kitchen and LPG/PNG connection, main fuel used for cooking, possession of assets such as radio/transistor, television, access to internet, laptop/computer, telephone/mobile phone/smartphone, bicycle/scooter/motorcycle/moped, car/jeep/van, main cereal consumed in the household, and mobile number (for Census-related communications only).
Under Voluntary self-enumeration system, residents can submit their details online from April 30 to May 14, 2026, via the dedicated portal, ahead of field operations.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Poonam Singh directed all Charge Census Officers and related staff to perform their duties with full dedication, responsibility, and strict adherence to timelines. She emphasized zero tolerance for negligence in Census-related work and appealed to the public to extend complete cooperation to the district administration during the process.
The training was attended by senior officials, including Joint Commissioner Vinit Kumar, SDM Jasleen Kaur Bhullar, Assistant Commissioners Jasdev Singh Sekhon, Amandeep Singh, Neeraj Jain, and representatives from various departments.
