Chandigarh December 2, 2025: The Department of Philosophy, in collaboration with the Department of Sociology, Panjab University, hosted a lecture titled "Democratic Citizenship: The Question of Belonging" delivered by Dr. Rajesh C. Shukla, Associate Professor, Saint Paul University, Ottawa, Canada.
Dr. Shukla drew upon comparative perspectives to explore the philosophical foundations of democratic citizenship, the meanings of belonging in plural societies, and the tensions between rights, inclusion, and civic responsibility. Through a blend of theoretical insight and contemporary examples, he examined how democratic institutions can foster inclusive belonging while addressing exclusionary practices and social marginalization.
The lecture was attended by faculty members, research scholars, and students from the Departments of Philosophy and Sociology as well as other disciplines. The presentation was followed by a lively and constructive question-and-answer session in which participants raised issues relating to policy implications, multiculturalism, and grassroots civic engagement. The interdisciplinary format of the event enriched the discussion and highlighted the relevance of philosophical inquiry to current social and political debates.
The session concluded with a vote of thanks to Dr. Shukla for his illuminating lecture and to all participants for their active involvement. Photographs of the event are attached for publication.
