KMV Celebrates World Food Day by Transforming Kitchen Waste into Culinary Creations

Jalandhar, October 16, 2026: Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (Autonomous) celebrated World Food Day 2026 by organizing “Waste to Taste: An Innovative Culinary Showcase” under the theme “Innovate today, Nourish tomorrow.”
The event was organised by Department of Biotechnology. The initiative highlighted the importance of innovation, sustainability, and scientific approaches to food use, while highlighting the potential of biotechnology in transforming the food industry and addressing emerging challenges related to food waste and nutritional security. As part of the activity, students creatively transformed leftover food items and commonly available kitchen ingredients into innovative, appetizing, and nutritious dishes. The activity encouraged students to explore the possibilities of using food resources that might otherwise be discarded, showing how creativity and scientific awareness can contribute to waste reduction and more responsible food consumption. Through their preparations, students highlighted innovative ways of adding value to leftover ingredients while recognizing the importance of food quality, nutritional preservation, and safe handling practices. The program placed particular emphasis on the growing contribution of the biotechnology industry to food innovation and sustainable food production. Food biotechnology offers promising approaches to improving food quality, developing value-added products, enhancing fermentation processes, and supporting food safety and preservation. Technologies involving beneficial microorganisms, enzymes and the recovery of valuable compounds from food-processing by-products can help transform underutilized resources into commercially useful products. The activity introduced students to the broader industrial potential of biotechnology, showing how scientific research can inspire practical solutions, resource-efficient production and new opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship.
Director Prof. (Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi appreciated the initiative and commended the students for their creativity and innovative approach to food use. She averred that the activity also highlighted the complementary relationship between biotechnology, food technology, and culinary innovation. While biotechnology provides scientific approaches for developing and improving food products, food technology contributes to processing, preservation, quality assessment, packaging, and storage. Culinary creativity brings these concepts closer to everyday life by proving how sustainable food choices can be made practical, appealing, and enjoyable.
